February 14 2024- The American Library Association’s annual Youth Media Awards for 2024 revealed the top honors in children’s literature. Author Dave Eggers received the John Newbery Medal for his middle-grade book “The Eyes and the Impossible,” illustrated by Shawn Harris. The John Newbery Medal is awarded to the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. Author and illustrator Vashti Harrison was honored with the Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children, recognized for her work “Big.” In an interview, Eggers expressed the joy of writing from the perspective of a stray dog in “The Eyes and the Impossible.”
