Growing up, the author harbored deep resentment and anger toward his father, who seemed to abandon him after remarrying and moving abroad. This sense of rejection lingered into adulthood, affecting his emotional well-being. In his 30s, the author decided to address these feelings directly by meeting his father during a trip to Ghana. With guidance from his therapist, he shifted his approach from confrontation to conversation. By listening to his father’s life story and struggles, he developed empathy and understanding, even though he still disagreed with his father’s past decisions. This conversation did not repair all wounds but opened up new connections to his heritage and his father, transforming their relationship and teaching him a valuable lesson about the importance of understanding others’ perspectives.
