Iowa Student asking for Changes to Chronic Absenteeism Law

A high school student, Isabella Wedge, is advocating for changes to Iowa’s law aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism. Last year, 21% of Iowa students were absent for more than 10% of the school year, with higher rates among English learners, low-income students, and those with disabilities. The law mandates that if a student misses 10% of school, the district must notify the county attorney and the family; at 15%, an action plan must be created; and at 20%, the student is considered truant and attendance becomes compulsory.
