How School Choice Left Black Children With Scraps for Their Education

February 15 2024- The article discusses the historical context of “school choice” and its impact on Black children from the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling in 1954 to the present. Before Brown, Black families sought more educational options for their children, aiming for access to better-resourced schools than those designated for Black children. While the concept of school choice promised parents the ability to choose outside of their zoned public school, the reality was often problematic. Black parents were faced with the difficult decision of sending their children to predominantly white schools with potential issues of violence, racial isolation, and psychological trauma, or under-resourced, understaffed, and policed predominantly Black public schools. The article suggests that, historically, Black children have not received equitable opportunities in the school choice landscape.
