St. Thomas Aquinas Academy (STAA), a Catholic school, has taken legal action against the Marinette School District in Wisconsin. The district refused to sell the vacant Garfield Elementary School building to STAA despite receiving a full-price offer. The district cited concerns about competition and declining enrollment affecting public school funding. Cheryl Sporie, from STAA, filed a claim with the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), arguing that the district’s decision hurts the community by maintaining a vacant property vulnerable to crime. STAA aims to consolidate its schools in Marinette, enhancing service for local students. WILL contends that continuing to hold the building without using it wastes taxpayer money and poses risks to public safety and property values.
