Forget gentle parenting and social emotional learning: Adversity is the formula for resilient kids

March 19 2024- In the past, parents, schools, and society focused on raising resilient, independent children. However, there has been a shift towards prioritizing concepts like happiness and adopting helicopter-like parenting styles. This shift has contributed to the rise of Generation Z, who report higher levels of anxiety, depression, and a decreased ability to navigate the world independently. Surprisingly, nearly 40 percent of young people have received mental health treatment compared to 26 percent of Gen Xers. Abigail Shrier’s new book, “Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up,” delves into this hyper-therapized culture and offers solutions to help young people break free from mental health struggles. While Shrier acknowledges she’s not a parenting expert, her insights and strategies for escaping this cycle are welcomed by many.
