Study finds young people from poorer families make fewer friends

February 15 2024- A study led by the University of Zurich and the University of Stockholm has found that children from low-income families have fewer opportunities to make friends and socially integrate at school. Examining data from over 200 school classes in Sweden, researchers discovered that having friends at school is crucial for adolescents’ development, shaping their social skills later in life. Teenagers who feel well integrated in their school class tend to have better mental health and higher grades, which can positively impact their future careers. The study aimed to explore the influence of parental income on social relationships within the classroom.
