Growing up with a brother on the autism spectrum required numerous compromises and adaptations. Tantrums were common due to communication challenges, but improved communication within the family reduced them over time. Establishing and respecting routines provided comfort for her brother, while clear communication and sensitivity to signs helped navigate interactions. Simplifying social situations and allowing breaks when overwhelmed eased social challenges. Despite not meeting societal expectations, her brother attains goals at his own pace. Recognising his need for downtime and appreciating his unique expressions of love fostered a strong bond. The experience highlighted the importance of understanding and accommodating individuals with autism in various aspects of life.
