February 13 2024- The Buxton boarding school in western Massachusetts experimented with banning smartphones on campus for a year, providing students, faculty, and staff with Light Phones, which have limited functionality for calls and texts and lack modern applications. Described as the “demon baby of an iPad and a Kindle,” these devices aimed to reduce interruptions during class, promote meaningful interactions, and limit screen time. Both teachers and students at Buxton reported positive outcomes, highlighting improved social interactions and a more focused learning environment. The experiment suggests a successful approach to addressing the challenges posed by smartphones in educational settings.
