After reopening for the second term on May 13, 2024, pupils at Muslim Primary School in Nakuru County participated in a clean-up exercise following flood damage. Basic education institutions nationwide resumed classes, although many learners and teachers in flood-affected areas sought refuge in alternative schools due to widespread destruction caused by the floods, which have claimed over 200 lives and displaced more than 120,000 people. Hatata and Bakuyu primary schools in Tana River County were particularly affected by the devastating floods.
