February 9 2024- A new study in the Review of Educational Research emphasizes the importance of traditional ink-and-paper reading for young readers’ comprehension. The research highlights that when elementary or middle school students engage in leisure reading with books, their comprehension improves. However, if they opt for electronic devices for leisure reading, their comprehension slightly declines. Numerous studies have consistently supported the idea that reading books for enjoyment contributes to better reading skills, enhancing comprehension, vocabulary, and the ability to grasp complex plots and ideas. The study suggests that spending 10 hours reading books on paper is likely to result in 6 to 8 times greater comprehension compared to reading on digital devices for the same duration.
