Adolescents Addicted to Short-Form Videos Tend to have More Sleep Problems and Social Anxiety

A study published in BMC Psychology found that adolescents with severe addiction to short-form videos—brief, engaging clips popular on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels—tend to experience poorer sleep quality and higher social anxiety. Conducted among 1,629 high school students in Shandong Province, China, the research revealed that those addicted to these videos reported more significant sleep issues and social anxiety. The study also suggested that social anxiety partially mediates the relationship between video addiction and sleep quality, though it didn’t establish a direct causal link. The authors recommend that schools implement measures to improve sleep quality among affected students.
