Bilingualism Under Threat: Structured Literacy will Make it Harder for Children to Hold on to Their Mother Tongue

Starting in the 2025 school year, all schools will implement structured literacy, or “phonics,” to teach reading. This method focuses on decoding the relationships between sounds and letters. However, there are concerns that this approach might negatively impact bilingual children, potentially causing them to lose their second language. The structured literacy approach is tailored for English and may not be effective for teaching other languages with different sound systems. This could be detrimental, given the well-documented benefits of bilingualism.
