A 2023 Consumer Reports finding raised concerns about lead and cadmium in some dark chocolate brands, but a recent study by Tulane University published in Food Research International suggests dark chocolate poses no adverse risks for adults and contains beneficial levels of essential minerals. The study tested 155 dark and milk chocolates, finding minimal risk from cadmium and lead, with only one dark chocolate brand exceeding the international limit for cadmium. Lead levels in two chocolates exceeded California’s standards, but no adverse risks were identified.
