Issues on Classrooms, Teachers, Curriculum: What is the State of Education in Public Schools?

Newly-appointed Education Secretary Sonny Angara is addressing several challenges in the Philippine education system. The 2022 PISA results revealed that Filipino students lag behind in math, science, reading, and creative thinking. To address this, Angara plans to establish a task force and introduce PISA-like quizzes to monitor progress and adjust interventions. He also aims to enhance classroom learning by adding a 30-minute reading period and focusing on science. The Department of Education (DepEd) faces worsening classroom shortages, with over 159,000 needed and only about 2,000 new classrooms built annually.
