Students in Philadelphia and New Jersey will benefit from new electric school buses thanks to recent funding announcements from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the state of New Jersey. The School District of Philadelphia will receive nearly $17 million in federal grants and rebates to purchase electric buses, while New Jersey is allocating $15 million to help schools replace diesel buses with electric vehicles. The funding comes from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which set aside $5 billion for school districts to transition to electric buses. Philadelphia’s funding will support a total of 45 buses, while New Jersey’s grants will facilitate the purchase of 48 buses and charging infrastructure at 14 schools. This marks the first round of funding from New Jersey’s electric school bus grant program.
