The Soft Life: Why Millennials are Opting Out of the Rat Race

Rose Gardner followed the traditional path to success, achieving academic excellence and climbing the corporate ladder. However, despite her accomplishments, she felt unfulfilled and overwhelmed by the pressure to maintain a lifestyle driven by consumerism. Struggling with ADHD and the demands of an office environment, she eventually made the decision to leave her job, sell her flat, and embrace a simpler life. Now, living what some call the “soft life,” she finds joy in simple pleasures like meditation and nature walks. This trend reflects a larger shift among millennials and Gen Z towards prioritising happiness and well-being over traditional markers of success.
