Three years ago, Canada introduced a comprehensive Early Learning and Child Care Plan, aiming to reduce child-care costs to an average of $10 per day nationwide by 2025. Each province and territory signed agreements to receive federal funds for accessible and affordable care systems. However, challenges have emerged in meeting space targets and ensuring quality care delivery. Ontario daycares are facing closures, while British Columbia and New Brunswick struggle with waiting lists and participation issues. Québec’s experience with universal child care highlights the importance of balancing accessibility with quality. Priorities for federal and provincial governments include ensuring quality assurance, promoting not-for-profit centres with well-paid staff, prioritising low-income families’ access, and focusing on better child care for all.
