Va. lawmakers consider sweeping changes to special education

February 16 2024- Virginia lawmakers, Del. Carrie Coyner and Sen. Barbara Favola, are proposing comprehensive measures to enhance the state’s special education services following criticism from parents and the federal government regarding Virginia’s compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The proposed measures include establishing a statewide system for overseeing individualized education programs (IEPs), increased training for educators on inclusive special education instruction, the creation of regional special education parent support centers, and providing additional specialists to school divisions. The initiatives aim to address challenges in meeting the needs of students with disabilities in Virginia.
