The exam board OCR has called for a reduction in the number of exams English students take, describing the current volume as excessive. Students spend about 31.5 hours on exams, prompting OCR to advocate for less reliance on exams at age 16, a revamped curriculum, and the establishment of an independent body to ensure curriculum relevance. OCR’s chief executive, Jill Duffy, acknowledged the strengths of existing exams but argued that their overuse can be detrimental. She emphasized that it’s possible to maintain rigor and standards while shifting towards a more balanced and enriching curriculum to better prepare students for the complexities of the modern world.
