Father of special needs son appeals unique case to Supreme Court regarding attempt to record school meeting

< 1 min read

Scott Pitta, a father of a special needs child in Massachusetts, is suing the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District for allegedly violating his constitutional rights. The district attempted to remove essential services from his son’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), prompting Pitta to record a meeting with school officials. When he announced his intention to record, the meeting was terminated. Pitta, represented by the Goldwater Institute, initially sued in federal court but is now appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court. He argues that parents have a First Amendment right to record meetings with government officials concerning their children. The school district contends that recording the meeting violated student confidentiality rights.
