In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools in North Texas are restructuring their approaches to classroom discipline.

In Dallas, the challenges of behavior and discipline persist in classrooms post-pandemic, with students struggling to manage emotions and exhibiting impulsive behavior. Meca Anderson, a social-emotional counselor at Lancaster ISD, introduced Bayou Kelly Lancaster, a social-emotional dog, to assist students. Similar concerns are echoed nationwide, as evidenced by a recent sickout protest at DeSoto’s McCowan Middle School. DeSoto ISD is implementing various strategies, including focus groups and professional development, to address classroom issues and support student well-being. Rena Honea of Alliance AFT emphasizes the collaborative effort needed from teachers, staff, students, and parents to navigate these challenges effectively. Amid ongoing adjustments, innovative solutions like introducing therapy dogs are being explored.
