Jill Haffley, a recently elected member of the Colorado Springs School District 11 board, is leading a crackdown on cellphone use in schools. Throughout her teaching career, she observed that cellphones were a significant source of classroom disruption, with students frequently distracted by social media, games, and videos. This distraction extended to students using their phones for non-academic purposes, such as recording TikTok videos in the bathroom. District 11 is now implementing a district-wide cellphone ban to address these issues. The new policy, effective this year, requires elementary students to keep phones and smartwatches in their backpacks, while middle and high school students must place their devices in magnetized pouches that lock.
