Many Students Head Back to the Classroom with New Cell Phone Ban in Place

< 1 min read

In Lexington County School District Three, a new rule banning cell phones during school hours has been implemented as part of a recent state budget mandate. This rule includes restrictions on smartwatches, earbuds, and other devices, requiring that cell phones remain in students’ book bags and on silent mode throughout the school day. While some parents have expressed concerns about safety, others believe the ban will be beneficial for students and align with past experiences. The South Carolina Department of Education will finalize the model policy language in August, and districts must adopt it or create their own by January 2025. Lexington District Three chose to implement the ban immediately to avoid mid-year disruptions.
