February 29 2024- The number of babies born in Japan declined for the eighth consecutive year, reaching a new record low in 2023, according to preliminary government data. The data revealed a 5.1% decrease in births from the previous year, totaling 758,631. Additionally, the number of marriages declined by 5.9% to 489,281, marking the first time in 90 years that the number fell below 500,000. This trend highlights the ongoing challenge Japan faces in addressing depopulation, as both birth and marriage rates continue to decline.
