Almost twice as many teachers resigned from Houston ISD so far this year compared to the last two school years

February 13 2024- The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is experiencing an increase in teacher resignations, with 633 teachers resigning from August through early January, compared to 331 during the same period in the previous school year. Educators attribute the higher turnover to a perceived culture of “fear and intimidation” following the state takeover and sweeping reforms. State-appointed superintendent Mike Miles emphasizes the need for a “high-performance culture,” but teachers express concerns about reduced autonomy and the imposition of centrally created curricula. The changes vary across campuses, leading to mixed feelings among the district’s more than 10,000 teachers
