An Idaho school district banned books. Here’s what a student did at her graduation

< 1 min read

During her graduation ceremony from the Idaho Fine Arts Academy, Annabelle Jenkins protested the removal of certain books from her school’s library by presenting “The Handmaid’s Tale” graphic novel to the superintendent, Derek Bub. This action, captured in a TikTok video that went viral, aimed to raise awareness about censorship and encourage dialogue about including diverse voices in book selection processes. Jenkins had advocated against the removal of books, including the graphic novel, from her school’s library throughout the year. The removal of these books, including others like “A Stolen Life” and “Water for Elephants,” sparked controversy within the West Ada School District. Jenkins, an avid reader and library advocate, expressed concern about the implications of restricting access to books and emphasized the importance of libraries as community spaces for learning and connection. Despite facing resistance from the administration, Jenkins remains committed to defending intellectual freedom and plans to pursue a career in library science.
