California Mustn’t Lose its Chance to Address its Teacher Shortage and Diversity Problem

California has been struggling with a teacher shortage that existed before the pandemic and was worsened by it. A significant issue is the state’s high-stakes teacher performance assessments (TPAs), such as the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA), Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), and the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA), which are seen as barriers to both addressing the shortage and improving teacher diversity.
