Electric school buses make headway, but hurdles still stand

< 1 min read

February 27 2024- The first electric school buses in the United States were introduced a decade ago in California, offering a quieter and cleaner alternative to traditional diesel buses. However, despite a decade of availability, less than 1% of the 489,000 school buses in the U.S. were electric by the end of 2023. The majority of school buses still rely on diesel fuel, emitting contaminants into the air and posing potential health risks. The slow adoption of electric school buses highlights a broader challenge in transitioning to more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options for students across the country.
