JCPS Lawsuit Reveals Vulnerabilities to Transportation Changes

< 1 min read

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is facing legal challenges over its transportation plan, which cut busing to traditional and magnet schools, leaving about 14,000 students without transportation. The lawsuit claims this disproportionately affects African American students, although JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio noted that only 6,000 of those students are of color. The case hinges on whether the transportation cuts violate equal protection laws. The court proceedings revealed the complexity of JCPS’s transportation planning, which has been disrupted by a bus driver shortage. Dr. Pollio testified that the previous routes were unsustainable and the current plan, which reduced start times and routes, cannot easily be reversed. However, JCPS has a partnership with TARC that may help restore some busing options.
