Library cuts and teachers quitting: Texas’s takeover of Houston schools

< 1 min read

March 14 2024- Staff in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) are demanding the removal of the state-appointed superintendent due to increased resignations, library cuts, and a rigid curriculum. Governor Greg Abbott’s decision for Texas to take control of HISD in 2023, replacing elected board members with state appointees, has drawn criticism. This move is seen as part of Abbott’s efforts to promote charter schools in Texas, following the failure of a bill to expand charter school vouchers due to lack of support in 2023.
