Nigeria and 15 other countries have received $36.5 million to eradicate Trachoma by 2027, addressing concerns among affected populations. Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, Country Director for Sightsavers, highlighted the debilitating effects of trachoma, including its impact on work, livelihoods, household tasks, and education, likening the pain to having sand or thorns in the eyes. Trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and primarily affects young children. The funding, sourced from international donors like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others, aims to combat this disease.
