Northland School Board Pleads Guilty to Charges After Fatal School Caving Trip in 2023

The board of Whangārei Boys’ High School has pleaded guilty to two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act following a tragic caving trip in May 2023. Karnin Petera, aged 15, lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters during the excursion to Abbey Caves. The charges relate to the board’s failure to ensure the safety of participants, including Karnin, and workers during the outdoor education activity. The court set a sentencing date for September 27, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges. The incident prompted the closure of Abbey Caves to the public, and the school has since implemented new safety policies in response.
