Pittsburgh Public Schools administrators are focusing on improving student learning outcomes, using data and emphasizing transparency. Superintendent Wayne Walters shared that the district is reevaluating third-grade reading instruction based on recent test scores. Strategies include placing literacy coaches in elementary schools, sharing best practices, and differentiating instruction to address inequities. This year’s third-grade reading proficiency was 46.2%, a slight decline from 2023, with racial disparities remaining. While some schools had success with African-American students, others saw declines among Black students, English learners, and students with disabilities.
