The Origin of Grades in American Schools

February 27 2024- Ezra Stiles, a former president of Yale University nearly 230 years ago, is credited with introducing grades as a means of evaluating academic work. Despite his various roles, including being a minister, founder of Brown University, and pen-pal to Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Stiles is primarily remembered for this contribution to the education system. The grading system implemented by Stiles has persisted for over 250 years, shaping the way students’ academic performance is assessed in schools and colleges today.
