Authorities Investigating Cyber Attack on Alabama State Department of Education

< 1 min read

The Alabama State Department of Education is facing an investigation into a cyber attack and data breach that occurred recently. Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey reported that the attack was intercepted by the department’s Information System staff on June 17, preventing full access to all targeted servers. However, some data and services were still breached and disrupted. State and federal authorities, including law enforcement and the Alabama Attorney General, are involved in the investigation along with an independent contractor. There is concern that student and employee data, potentially including personally identifiable information, may have been accessed. Mackey advises affected parties to monitor their credit and operate under the assumption that their data could have been compromised.
