Librarian who quit job rather than enforce restrictive library policy wins intellectual freedom award

< 1 min read

Matthew Good resigned from his job as a librarian in the Donegal School District in 2022 rather than enforce a policy limiting students’ access to library books. In 2024, he was awarded the 2024 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table of the American Library Association. This award recognizes his commitment to intellectual freedom and advocacy for access to books in school libraries. Good, now an instructional technology librarian at Ursinus College, continues to speak out on these issues. He is involved in various groups promoting intellectual freedom, including the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association’s Intellectual Freedom Task Group and the Intellectual Freedom Round Table. He hopes to see schools and communities prioritize diverse representation in library collections. Additionally, the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association received the Gerald Hodges Chapter Relations Award from the Intellectual Freedom Round Table.
