Upon moving to Berlin, the author observed a significant cultural difference in parenting attitudes, characterized by a hands-off approach where parents seldom intervened in their children’s behavior, even in public settings. This was exemplified when a toddler threw clay balls without any reprimand from the mother or the instructor. In contrast, upon returning to New York City, the author found a stricter environment with more rules for children. Berlin’s affordability and excellent childcare system had been beneficial, but the transition to New York’s structured public school system was challenging for her son. Despite the reverse culture shock, the family appreciates New York’s diversity, cultural opportunities, and more proactive parenting.
