Schools across the state are facing a severe shortage of teachers, particularly in special education. Last year, there were over 288 vacancies for special education teachers, more than double the number of vacancies in math. Dorchester School District Two is struggling with these challenging-to-fill positions, often facing difficulties finding qualified candidates due to specific certification requirements. Efforts to address the shortage include a state-funded program offering tuition for special education certification. Dr. Eugene Sires Elementary School principal Jennifer Bates is actively recruiting from within her own school community to fill these roles. In contrast, Charleston County School District has no current vacancies, attributed to substantial salary increases that have made it the highest-paying district in the state.
