February 6 2024- New Canaan Schools Superintendent Bryan Luizzi has requested the Connecticut Department of Education to reconsider approving the district’s K-3 literacy curriculum after it was rejected last month. The rejection came as part of the state’s oversight of literacy curricula for K-3 students under the Right to Read legislation passed in June 2021. Districts could apply for a waiver to opt out if they believed their curriculum met the state’s criteria. New Canaan schools, along with 39 other districts, received a rejection on December 1, resulting in a “transitional” waiver status. The superintendent is seeking a reconsideration of the decision.
