Retired Brevard engineer saw lack of marginalized kids in STEM: How he’s changing things

< 1 min read

Gianna Shelly may only be in fourth grade, but she’s already learned to fly a drone.

“They’re neat, but sometimes they’re dangerous,” she said.

She would know: The fourth-grader’s dad, Shelly Abraham, is an engineer and works on planes, she said moments after piloting a drone around a small classroom at Florida Tech. Learning about aircrafts this school year in a class led by Bernard Bryan, education chair of South Brevard NAACP, with her dad volunteering as an assisting teacher, Gianna is able to better understand the principles of flight like lift, drag, weight and thrust — all things her dad talks about when it comes to his job.
