Cash-strapped government schools are increasingly rejecting charitable funding due to complaints about “onerous” conditions attached to the grants, according to new research from Deakin University. Principals have reported that the additional requirements, such as attending coaching sessions and extensive reporting, outweigh the benefits of the grants, which typically range from $20,000 to $30,000. As a result, some principals have vowed never to accept such funds again. The Gonski Review in 2011 promoted charitable donations as a key part of public school funding, and Schools Plus was established with tax-exempt status in 2015 to facilitate this.
