March 13 2024- A leading eye surgeon warns that members of Generation Z are increasingly at risk of near-sightedness due to excessive screen time on electronic devices, potentially leading to a blindness epidemic if the trend continues. Rates of near-sightedness, or myopia, have surged globally, with a 46% increase in the UK over the past three decades and a 59% spike among teenagers in the US, according to reports cited by the Daily Mail. Zoomers, as members of Generation Z are sometimes called, are particularly vulnerable due to prolonged indoor activities and lack of exposure to natural sunlight during puberty, increasing their risk of developing serious vision problems, including blindness.
