In 2022, two-thirds of fourth graders nationwide were not proficient readers, according to the Nation’s Report Card. However, Manlius Pebble Hill, a private K–12 school in DeWitt, New York, has adopted a unique approach to improving literacy rates, using a curriculum from The Institute of Multisensory Education based on the science of reading. Over the past decade, this approach has led to significant improvements in student reading performance. For instance, a second grader improved from reading 18 words per minute to 60 words per minute. This method, which incorporates Scarborough’s Reading Rope, is typically used for interventions but is applied to all students at this school. Teachers Amy Abdo and Kate Berry have seen substantial success and hope other educators will adopt similar methods. They will share their approach in a webinar for New York State elementary educators in May.
