Alberta to Ban Cellphones in K-12 Classrooms Starting in Fall

Alberta Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides announced new guidelines stating that cellphones in schools can aid learning but also pose distractions and cyberbullying risks. Exceptions will be made for health and specialized educational needs. Students must keep personal devices off and out of sight during class, and school internet access will restrict social media. Alberta’s decision follows other provinces like Quebec, Ontario, and B.C. in implementing such restrictions, reflecting concerns from parents and teachers about cellphone disruptions to learning and student well-being. Implementation and enforcement will be managed by school boards under provincial standards.
