On Thursday, the Federal Government approved an increase in the Universal Basic Education (UBE) matching grants for state governments, raising the allocation to N3,554,642,584.46. This increase, announced by Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), follows the passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bill. The new grant amount, derived from 2% of the consolidated revenue fund for basic education, requires state governments to provide an equal counterpart fund. Previously, the annual grant was approximately N1.3 billion, but it has now been raised to N3.3 billion to support UBE projects.
