House passes child tax credit expansion — which could benefit millions of families, experts say

February 16 2024- On Wednesday night, House lawmakers passed a $78 billion bipartisan tax package, which includes an expansion of the child tax credit (CTC). The proposed changes aim to broaden access to the CTC and retroactively increase the refundable portion for the 2023 tax year. Although not as generous as the pandemic-era child tax credit, the modifications could still have a significant impact on many families. The bill requires 60 votes to pass in the Senate, presenting a challenge amid other legislative priorities.
