From an early age, societal emphasis is often placed on academic achievements as the key to success and happiness. However, a study revealed the significant impact of children’s social and emotional skills on their adult lives. Kindergarten teachers assessed these skills using a Social Competence Scale, and the findings were revisited 19 years later.

  • Academic success, while important, isn’t solely determined by test scores. Social and emotional skills play a crucial role in readiness for learning and overall success.
  • Social skills like sharing and cooperation correlate strongly with future success. Individuals with strong social competencies were more likely to achieve educational milestones and secure stable employment.
  • Social behaviours are malleable and can be improved over time, highlighting the importance of ongoing development and parental influence.

While the study has limitations, it underscores the significance of teaching social skills alongside academic subjects. Neglecting social-emotional learning in education could have long-term consequences for children’s well-being and success.
