Michigan Students Fell Behind During COVID. Their Recovery Lags Other States

< 1 min read

Michigan’s public school children are struggling to recover academically from pandemic-related setbacks, lagging behind most states according to a national analysis. Despite modest gains in 2023, Michigan students remain nearly half a grade behind in math and reading. This recovery is notably weaker compared to states like Ohio and Wisconsin, where students made better progress in reading. Federal COVID-19 relief funds, totaling about $5.6 billion for Michigan, were intended to aid academic recovery by September 2024. However, the state faces challenges in efficiently allocating these funds, with disparities observed between districts in their recovery efforts. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s approach to pandemic management and subsequent educational strategies have faced criticism for their impact on learning outcomes, particularly among low-income students.
