The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines is collaborating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to expedite the construction of new classroom buildings. Education Secretary Sonny Angara identified issues in the current procurement system, including problems with site validation and land suitability, which have hindered progress. He aims to address these issues by the end of the year and begin construction by January. Currently, the country needs 159,000 additional classrooms, with a projected annual increase of 12,000. DepEd proposed a PHP397 billion budget to build these classrooms, each costing PHP2 million. Funds for repairing school buildings damaged by Typhoon Carina are also now accessible.
